Physics
  • An unmanned spacecraft that investigates features within the solar system. A planetary probe examines the conditions on or in the vicinity of one or more planets and a lunar probe is designed to obtain information about the moon. Probes are propelled by rocket motors and once out of the earth’s gravitational field use their propulsion systems for course changes. Many are powered by panels of solar cells, for both internal operation and radio communications.


Astronomy
  • A spacecraft that is sent away from the Earth to examine another celestial body or the conditions in space. The first space probe was Luna 1, a Moon probe launched by the Soviet Union on 1959 January 2. The first successful planetary probe was NASA’s Mariner 2, which flew past Venus in 1962.


Space Exploration
  • Any instrumented object sent beyond Earth to collect data from other parts of the Solar System and from deep space. The first probe was the Soviet Luna 1, which flew past the Moon in 1959. The first successful planetary probe was the US Mariner 2, which flew past Venus in 1962. The first probe to orbit another planet was Mariner 9, which went into orbit around Mars in November 1971. The first space probe to leave the Solar System was Pioneer 10 in 1983.
