A reflector at the South African Astronomical Observatory, opened in 2005, with a hexagonal mirror 11.1 × 9.8 m in diameter, made of 91 hexagonal segments; the maximum effective aperture is 9.8 m. It is a modified version of the Hobby–Eberly Telescope. SALT has a fixed elevation angle of 37° from the vertical and can rotate only about its azimuth axis. SALT is a joint project of South Africa, Germany, India, New Zealand, Poland, the UK, and the USA.
