A low mound, up to about 2 m high, 20 m long, and 10 m wide, that is found in tundra environments. It consists of a core of clear ice covered by a layer 0.3–1.0 m thick of sand, gravel, and soil, with tundra plants growing on it. See alsopingo.
Geography
In a periglacial landscape, a swelling in the ground due to the expansion of an underground ice lens. Solifluction displaces the material at the top of the mound, so that when the ice lens melts a depression forms, often surrounded by a rampart.
