A horizontal tube-like subsurface cavity within the soil; macropores greater than 1 mm in diameter and up to a metre or more in diameter. They are continuous in length such that they can transmit water, sediment, and solutes through the soil. The classic paper is Wilson and Smart (1984) Catena 11, 145.
