A chemical reaction in which hydrogen is removed from a compound. Dehydrogenation of organic compounds converts single carbon-carbon bonds into double bonds. It is usually effected by means of a metal catalyst or – in biological systems – by dehydrogenases.
Chemical Engineering
A chemical reaction involving the removal of hydrogen from a compound. In organic molecules such as straight-chain hydrocarbons or fatty acids, single carbon–carbon bonds are converted into double bonds by the removal of hydrogen atoms.
Biology
A chemical reaction in which hydrogen is removed from a compound. Dehydrogenation of organic compounds converts single carbon-carbon bonds into double bonds. In biological systems it is usually effected by dehydrogenases.
