See hydrogen spectrum.
A sequence of absorption or emission lines in the far-infrared part of the spectrum, due to hydrogen. They range from Humphreys-α at 12.37 μm, towards shorter wavelengths, the spacing between the lines diminishing as they converge on the Humphreys series limit at 3.28 μm. The Humphreys series is caused by electron jumps between the sixth energy level and higher levels. It is named after the American physicist Curtis Judson Humphreys (1898–1986). See also hydrogen spectrum.
A series of lines in the hydrogen spectrum with the form
where λ is the wavelength associated with the lines and R is the Rydberg constant. The Humphreys series was discovered by Curtis Humphreys (1898–1986) in 1953 and lies in the far infrared.
