A sequence of absorption or emission lines in the far-infrared part of the spectrum, due to hydrogen. They range from Humphreys-α‎ at 12.37 μ‎m, towards shorter wavelengths, the spacing between the lines diminishing as they converge on the Humphreys series limit at 3.28 μ‎m. The Humphreys series is caused by electron jumps between the sixth energy level and higher levels. It is named after the American physicist Curtis Judson Humphreys (1898–1986).
