A form of equatorial mounting in which the telescope is carried within a rectangular cradle or yoke, which is itself supported on two columns or piers aligned north–south; also known as a yoke mounting. The yoke forms the polar axis, and the telescope pivots within this yoke around the declination axis. In variants known as modified English mounting or cross-axis mounting, the yoke is replaced by a single beam, the telescope being on one side and a counterweight on the other. Instruments with English mountings include the 100-inch (2.5-m) Hooker Telescope at Mount Wilson Observatory.
