An extremely abundant compound occurring in several different natural forms, the best known of which are probably quartz and common sand (in which the silica is discoloured by ferric oxides). Silica is important as a source of silicon for the manufacture of electronic components, devices, and integrated circuits, as a grown oxide for the passivation of such equipment, and as natural quartz, which has marked piezoelectric properties.
