A method of grain-size analysis (see particle size) in which the sample is passed through a stack of sieves, arranged with the coarsest mesh at the top and finest at the base. The weight of sediment trapped on each mesh is recorded, and percentage weight plotted either on a histogram or cumulative frequency curve (see cumulative percentage curve).
