An observatory at an altitude of 1150 m in the Warrumbungle mountains near Coonabarabran, New South Wales, owned and operated by the Australian National University. It was founded in 1962 as an outstation of Mount Stromlo Observatory; its first telescope was a 1-m reflector opened in 1964. Siding Spring is the site of the Australian Astronomical Observatory containing the 3.9-m Anglo-Australian Telescope, opened in 1974, and the 1.2-m United Kingdom Schmidt Telescope, opened 1973. Other major instruments are the Australian National University’s 2.3-m Advanced Technology Telescope opened in 1984 and the 1.35-m SkyMapper survey telescope which came into operation in 2010. Siding Spring is also the location of the Faulkes Telescope South and two 1-m telescopes of the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network opened in 2013.
