A sprig of clover, comprising three leaves and the stalk (petiole) to which they are attached, which is a symbol of Ireland. There is uncertainty over which species of clover is the true shamrock, but the most popular candidates are lesser clover (Trifolium dubium) and white clover (T. repens).
