The property of certain crystals in which there is no element of symmetry present to cause the repetition of upper-hemisphere faces in the lower hemisphere. A good example is tourmaline, where there are no horizontal axes of symmetry or centre of symmetry, but only one vertical axis of three-fold symmetry and three vertical planes of symmetry.
