who spent most of his career in the USA. A mathematics graduate of U Melbourne (1942), Watson worked for five years as a teacher before travelling to the USA, where he obtained his PhD from North Carolina State U in 1951. After a succession of posts in Australia, England, and Canada, he moved to Princeton U in 1970. Watson is known for his part in the introduction of the 1950 Durbin–Watson statistic for testing for autocorrelation and in the 1964 Wheeler–Watson test for cyclic data. He was a talented artist.
