Physics
  • A type of quartz prism for producing plane-polarized light. It deviates the ordinary and extraordinary rays in opposite directions by approximately the same amount. Like the Rochon prism, it can be used with ultraviolet radiation. It is named after the British inventor and chemist William Hyde Wollaston (1766–1828), who invented it in 1807. Astronomy
  • A device used for analysing and producing polarized light, used in some designs of polarimeter. It consists of two prisms of either quartz or calcite cemented together. The Wollaston prism divides incoming light into two linearly polarized beams with perpendicular planes. It is named after the British scientist William Hyde Wollaston (1766–1828).
