Compounds that contain carbon and halogen atoms and (sometimes) hydrogen. The simplest are compounds such as tetrachloromethane (CCl4), tetrabromomethane (CBr4), etc. The haloforms are also simple halocarbons. The chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) contain carbon, chlorine, and fluorine. Similar to these are hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), which contain carbon, chlorine, fluorine, and hydrogen, and the hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which contain carbon, fluorine, and hydrogen. The halons are a class of halocarbons that contain bromine.
