A solitary, nocturnal, herbivorous mammal (family Tapiridae) that has short legs, three digits on the hind legs and four on the forelegs, all with small hooves and with thick pads on all feet, and a nose developed into a short, mobile trunk. Tapirs live mainly in dense forest. The genus Tapirus comprises four species found in tropical Central and South America, and Acrocodia indicus is the Malayan tapir.
