A small marine fish in the genus Hippocampus (family Syngnathidae) that swims in an upright position with the tail curled, and has a scaled body and tail, and a neck and head shaped like those of a horse. The neck is flexible and the head bears a horn. Sea horses swim poorly. They feed on small crustaceans. There are 54 species found in shallow tropical and temperate waters worldwide.
