A European Space Agency (ESA) satellite that carried out 71 experiments on microgravity, solar observations, and material technology from July 1992 to July 1993. It also carried the Wide-Angle Telescope for Cosmic Hard X-Rays (WATCH) developed by the Danish Space Research Institute, detecting 19 cosmic gamma-ray bursts.
EURECA, weighing 4 500 kg, was the largest spacecraft ever built and flown by the ESA, and the first that returned with samples. It acquired the name ‘Retrievable Carrier’ because it was deployed by NASA's space shuttle Atlantis and retrieved by Endeavour.
