One of the two major spiral arms of our Galaxy, the other being the Perseus Arm. According to current models of the Galaxy, the Scutum–Centaurus Arm emerges from the end of our Galaxy’s central bar on the side closest to the Sun, then passes between us and the galactic centre at a distance of about 10 000 l.y. The Sagittarius Arm, which is one of two minor spiral arms of the Galaxy, is interposed between us and the Scutum–Centaurus Arm and hence partly obscures it.
