A space law treaty drafted in 1979 by the United Nations to ban military activity and national claims to the Moon and other celestial bodies. The treaty was never ratified by the nations involved in space exploration.
The treaty stated that any nation could conduct scientific investigations and establish stations on the Moon and planets, but should not contaminate the environments. It added that ‘The exploration and use of the Moon shall be the province of all mankind and shall be carried out for the benefit and in the interests of all countries, irrespective of their degree of economic or scientific development.’
