A variable used to describe a gauge theory that can be regarded as a generalization of lines of force or loops of flux in electricity and magnetism. The Wilson loop is named after Kenneth Wilson (1936–2013), who in 1974 used it in a criterion to test the hypothesis of quark confinement; it had, however, been used by many authors before this, including Paul Dirac in 1931.
