1. An electrode that has an open structure, such as a mesh or a plate with a hole in it, thus allowing an electron beam to pass through it. See thermionic valve.

2. The nationwide high-voltage transmission line system that interconnects many electricity power stations. It transmits voltages of up to 400 kilovolts. Voltages as high as 735 kV are used in some countries.
