History
By tradition founded in 301, San Marino was recognized by the pope as an independent state in 1291. Its independence is guaranteed by a treaty made in 1862 with the newly united Italy. Although not a member of the European Union, it had a currency union with Italy, which meant that it joined the euro in 1999. A referendum on joining the EU was held in 2013, and, although the vote was in favour the proposal was rejected on the grounds that too few voters took part.
