Chemical Engineering

An enclosed conduit used to transport fluids. These are circular in cross section and available in widely varying sizes, wall thicknesses, and materials. Pipes are specified in terms of their diameter and wall thickness. The wall thickness is indicated by the schedule number. Pipes are commonly made from metals and alloys, glass, and various plastics. Low-carbon steel pipes are most commonly used in process plants. PVC pipes are typically used for water and gas lines. Lengths of pipes are joined together by flanges, welding, or screw fittings.

Computer

A command-line operator available in some operating systems whereby a number of processes (tasks), whose names are listed sequentially, are activated concurrently so that each process (after the first-named) accepts as its input the output from the immediately previously named process. The operating system provides buffering of data between the processes, and so the user is relieved of the necessity of specifying temporary files for receiving and delivering the data.
