Salt diapir which has pushed up existing sediments into a dome structure, and which may result in the trapping of gas, oil, or water in the pores of the permeable rocks adjacent to and above the salt dome if a suitable cap rock is present. The rocks ahead of the salt diapir are often severely faulted and may give rise to fault traps. Oil may also accumulate in the porous top of the salt diapir.
