单词 Sakigake
释义
Sakigake

Astronomy
  • A Japanese space probe to Halley’s Comet, launched in 1985 January; its name in Japanese means ‘pioneer’, and it was Japan’s first interplanetary spacecraft. Sakigake passed 7 million km from the sunward side of the comet’s nucleus in 1986 March. It later performed three Earth swingbys in 1992–4. Contact was lost in 1995 November. See also suisei.

Space Exploration
  • Japan's first deep-space probe, designed to measure the solar wind and magnetic field during a fly-by of Halley's Comet. The 138-kg spacecraft was launched on 7 January 1985 as MS-T5, and was subsequently renamed. On 11 March 1986, Sakigake made its closest approach to the comet at a distance of 6.99 million km. The probe made several Earth fly-bys until 1995, before depletion of its fuel supply.

Sakigake was identical to Japan's second deep-space probe, Suisei, except for the scientific instruments it carried on board.

Geology and Earth Sciences
  • A Japanese ISAS mission to comet Halley, launched in 1985, carrying instruments to measure plasma wave spectra, solar wind ions, and interplanetary magnetic fields. All its instruments worked correctly. Sakigake flew by Halley on 11 March 1986, and swung by Earth three times, on 8 January 1992, 14 June 1993, and 28 October 1994. Communication with the satellite ended on 7 January 1999.
