An auxiliary system in a spacecraft that can quickly replace a primary system that fails. A back-up can also be used for additional power: one main computer and two back-ups are needed to operate the robot arm on the International Space Station.

An astronaut or cosmonaut serving as a reserve crew member on a mission. Back-ups replace scheduled crew members who become ill or develop other problems.
