A large ape (family Hominidae), found only in tropical and subtropical African forests, that lives mainly on the ground. Males weigh up to 180 kg, females typically half that. Gorillas live in troops of varying size and structure, led by a mature male (silverback). Gorillas are herbivores, although some also eat insects. They are highly intelligent and use tools to achieve goals. There are two species, Gorilla gorilla (western gorilla) and G. beringei (eastern gorilla), with several subspecies.
