An artiodactyl (family Bovidae) that belongs to the subfamily (Caprinae) of goat-antelopes. Goats live in mountain habitats and are able to move safely among rocks to reach the sparse vegetation on which they browse; they are the only bovids able to climb trees. There are nine species in the genus Capra, native to the mountains of Europe, the Middle East, and Caucasus. The domesticated goat is C. aegagrus hircus, one of the earliest animals to be domesticated and now with more than 300 breeds.
