A general term for the ability of a glacier to erode its bed. A distinction is made between total glacier power (basal shear stress multiplied by average velocity) and effective power (determined by the contribution of basal sliding to the total velocity). It follows that temperate glaciers may be roughly ten times more powerful than polar and subpolar types.
