The radio astronomy observatory of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), located at an altitude of 1222 m at Big Pine, California, and founded in 1956. It has two 27.4-m dishes opened in 1959, later joined by five 1.8-m dishes to form the Owens Valley Solar Array, operated since 1997 by the New Jersey Institute of Technology. In 2014 eight 2.1-m antennas were added to form the Expanded Owens Valley Solar Array (EOVSA). A 39.6-m dish, the observatory’s largest, opened in 1968. It also hosts a 25-m dish of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory’s Very Long Baseline Array. The six 10.4-m dishes of the former OVRO Millimeter Array were moved in 2004 to a new site to form part of the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA), but this itself closed in 2015.
