A typically solitary, nocturnal bird of prey with large, forward-looking eyes and asymmetrically positioned earholes, feathers adapted to allow the bird to fly silently, a curved bill, and in most species a facial disc of feathers that can be moved to direct focused sound to the ears. Owls feed mainly on insects and small mammals, with some species specialized to hunt fish. There are about 200 species, comprising the order Strigiformes, found worldwide.
