and the first Canadian to fly in space as a payload specialist, on a space shuttle mission (41-G) in October 1984. He also flew on STS-77 in 1996 and the Endeavour mission of November 2000 to assemble the International Space Station and deliver supplies. He logged 667 hours in space. Garneau was selected as a Canadian astronaut in 1983 and became deputy director of the Canadian astronaut programme in 1989. He was selected for astronaut training at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in 1992, appointed president of the Canadian Space Agency in 2001, and resigned from that position in November 2005 to run for federal office.
