单词 absorption edge
释义
absorption edge

Physics
  • A sharp discontinuity in the absorption spectrum of a material. An absorption edge occurs where the energy of an absorbed photon corresponds to a transition from one energy level to a higher energy level or to the ionization potential of an atom. The absorption edge is an essential feature of spectra, particularly X-ray spectra. The study of absorption edges is useful in X-ray crystallography as it can be used to determine the ‘handedness’ of substances that exhibit optical activity.

Astronomy
  • A limiting feature in a series of absorption lines from a single element (e.g. hydrogen), representing the wavelength at which the element becomes ionized. In the Balmer series of hydrogen, the lines become closer together as the series limit of 364.6 nm is reached, forming an edge at that wavelength (see Balmer Limit). Similarly, in the Lyman series the lines become closer towards the Lyman limit of 91.2 nm.
