The term, ‘functional’ is variously used, typically referring to a scalar-valued function on a set. In calculus of variations, the aim is to minimize a functional which might represent length, area, work, etc.. In linear algebra and functional analysis, the term is used for a linear map φ‎:V→F from a vector space to its base field, and so an element of the dual space.
