单词 convergent evolution
释义
convergent evolution

Biology
  • The development of superficially similar structures in unrelated organisms, usually because the organisms live in the same kind of environment. Examples are the wings of insects and birds and the streamlined bodies of whales and fish. Compare adaptive radiation; parallel evolution.

Geology and Earth Sciences
  • The development of similar external morphology in organisms which are unrelated—except through distant ancestors—as each adapts to a similar way of life. Sharks (fish), dolphins (mammals), and ichthyosaurs (extinct reptiles) provide good examples of convergence in the aquatic habitat.
