A stage-wise liquid–liquid separation technique in which fresh solvent is added to each stage that progressively removes the solute (see Fig. 14). The number of stages and the amount of solvent needed is determined by a material balance at each stage. Experimental data is required to determine the effectiveness of each separation stage.
