who has developed new methods of exploratory data analysis and machine learning. A physics graduate at UCB, he began developing statistical algorithms when he joined Stanford U in the 1970s. He was the IMS Rietz Lecturer in 1999 and the Wald Lecturer in 2009. He was awarded the Parzen Prize in 2004, elected a fellow of the AAAS in 2005 and of the NAS in 2010.
