  • who held various government posts. As an amateur scientist he experimented with electricity, introducing the concepts of ‘positive’ and ‘negative’. In 1752 he carried out the extremely dangerous experiment of flying a kite during a thunderstorm and proved the electrical nature of lightning. He also invented the lightning conductor.


Philosophy
  • Although Franklin’s distinction rests on his work as a scientist and statesman, his homely moral and political philosophy, particularly as expounded in Poor Richard’s Almanack (1733–58), has been extremely influential as an expression of a folksy, democratic virtue ethic.


World History
  • A wealthy printer and publisher, he was one of the signatories to the peace between the USA and Great Britain after the War of American Independence. His main scientific achievements were the formulation of a theory of electricity, based on the concept of an electric fluid, which introduced (and arbitrarily defined) positive and negative electricity, and a demonstration of the electrical nature of lightning, which led to the invention of the lightning conductor. His inventions include the ‘Franklin stove’ (a kind of free-standing cast-iron heater) and bifocal spectacles.
