In the modelling of heat flow, Fourier’s law states that q =−k∇T, where T denotes temperature, q denotes heat flux, and k is the material’s thermal conductivity. See heat equation, Newton’s law of cooling.

Chemical Engineering

A relationship that states that the steady-state rate of heat transfer by conduction is proportional to the cross-sectional area perpendicular to the direction of flow and to the temperature gradient of the path of conduction:
$Q = - k A \frac{\partial T}{\partial L}$

where k is the thermal conductivity, A is the area, T is the temperature, and L is the distance through which heat flows. The negative sign signifies that heat flow occurs from hot to cold.
