A cluster of atoms that has some of the properties of an individual atom. In superatoms, for example, valence electrons occupy orbitals that are defined by the whole cluster. There are certain numbers of electrons that are associated with stability and are therefore analogous to the electron configurations of the noble gases. Thus, superatoms with one more electron than these numbers are analogous to alkali metals, and superatoms with one fewer electron are analogous to halogens. See Bose–Einstein condensation.
