A series of elongated cavities, with curved or irregular tops and flat bases, filled with calcite cements. Stromatactis cavities occur most commonly in carbonate and mud mounds. They were originally believed to be of organic origin, but currently they are thought to result either from the dewatering of lime muds or from the development of cavities beneath local cemented crusts on the sea floor.
