A powerful radio galaxy about 60 million l.y. away in the constellation Fornax, identified with the galaxy NGC 1316. Optically, it appears as a peculiar elliptical or lenticular galaxy, apparently the result of a merger between an elliptical and a spiral or two or more spirals. At magnitude 8.5 it is visually the brightest member of the Fornax Cluster of galaxies, lying on the cluster’s southwestern fringes, 3° from the cluster’s centre.
