Any of various instruments for measuring the refractive index of a substance or medium. An example is the Pulfrich refractometer, which is a glass block with a polished top, with a small cell on top of the block for liquid samples. A telescope rotating on a vertical circular scale is used to find the angle (α) between the top of the block and the direction in which the limiting ray (from incident light parallel to the top face) leaves the side of the block. If the refractive index of the block (ng) is known, that of the liquid can be calculated using n=√(ng2−sin2α).
