A short-range US military missile, modified for use as a space launcher. Redstone rockets launched the first two flights of the Mercury project. A modified Redstone, Juno 1, launched the first US satellite, Explorer 1, in 1958.

The rocket was developed at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama, by a team headed by German rocket engineer Wernher von Braun.
