An insect of the order Lepidoptera, in which the wings are covered with overlapping scales, often brightly coloured. Butterflies are mainly diurnal. Most adults have a proboscis with which they imbibe nectar. Most larvae (caterpillars) feed on plants; the pupae have no mouthparts. Butterflies occur worldwide except for Antarctica and there are about 18,500 species.
