An effect occurring in radio signal propagation when the signal is received by a mobile receiver. The signal can take many paths from the transmitter, especially in urban areas where the signal will reflect off buildings and other obstructions. The signals from these different paths will arrive at the receiver with different phases resulting from the different path lengths. The signals combine and in some cases will cancel one another out, resulting in nulls in the signal strength – Rayleigh fading.
