A former beach, recognizable by beach deposits and marine shells, often accompanied by rock platforms and dead cliffs, which now stands above sea level some metres inland. At sites of isostatic rebound, several raised beaches may be seen at different levels; the raised beaches of Scotland range from 6 to 14 m OD. Raised beaches result from tectonic uplift; see van Vliet-Lanoe et al. (2000) J. Geodynam. 29, 1. Gallagher and Thorpe (1997) Irish Geog. 30, 2, 68 explain how to date a raised beach.
