The maximum electronic energy level that is occupied by an electron in a solid at a temperature of absolute zero. At higher temperatures some electrons are excited into higher energy states. The Fermi level then corresponds to the value of energy at which the Fermi–Dirac distribution function has a value ½. See also energy bands.
