A radio observatory at Pushchino, about 100 km south of Moscow, founded in 1956 and operated by the Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Its main instruments are the RT-22, a 22-m dish operating at wavelengths as short as 8 mm, opened 1959; the DKR-1000, a Mills Cross instrument with arms 40 m wide and 1 km long, opened 1964; and the BSA, a large phased array consisting of 16 384 dipoles covering an area of 384 × 187 m, opened 1973.
